About Vancouver Airport

Set along the western side of the city of Vancouver, the Vancouver International Airport is a public airport that has won several awards for being one of the best international airports in the world. It has also been named as "The Best Airport in North America" for 2012 by SkyTrax. The award was decided after tallying the votes given by more than 9.8 million travelers that have flown in and out of the airport from over 100 various countries. This award is a very prestigious accolade, given the fact that the Vancouver International Airport is the second most active airport in Canada.

The Vancouver International Airport was several years in the making. It began in 1927 when Charles Lindbergh stated he would not include Vancouver on his North American tour because they did not have an adequate airfield. Because of this snub by the aviator, the city began construction of a new airfield in 1930 on Sea Island on the western side of the city. Located in the Richmond section of town, the first airstrip would feature a single 730-metre runway operated by a control tower on the top of a wood-framed building. The airstrip would be leased by the Federal Government during World War II who began making improvements, adding new hangers and a manufacturing plant. The airstrip would become a base for the Royal Canadian Air Force as well as the site for a Boeing manufacturing plant.

After the war, the airport would revert back to the city while maintaining the Boeing manufacturing plant and many other improvements added to the airport by the military. The city would also begin making improvements and by 1968 a new terminal would be added to the airport, which is still in use today. The 1960's would also usher in the age of the jet planes and with its new terminal, Vancouver Airport was fully equipped to handle the new planes. By the 1980's the airport opened up to International Flights and became the Vancouver International Airport.

Today, the Vancouver International Airport handles flights from around the world, having continued to expand its facilities and make improvements that would earn it the accolade of the best airport in North America. The airport serves flights from cities such as Toronto, San Francisco, Halifax, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Honolulu, Sydney, Shanghai and many more. In 2011, the airport announced that it will be opening up more flights to Asia and serving the Asian market with more regular flights.

The Vancouver International Airport is a complete travel facility with a main terminal that includes shops, restaurants, lounges, car rental agencies, newsstands and bookstores and a whole lot more. The airport also offers an information center as well as a full service parking lot, bus terminal, taxi pickup and dropoff locations and more. The airport terminal has been designed with a unique Canadian architecture that highlights Northwest native art and lots of natural lighting to enhance the use of blues and greens in the terminals decor.
